“RTS NOLA Post-Katrina School Reform” with special guest parent, Ashana Bigard

rock_the_schools_3Minneapolis, MN (July 20, 2015)For the month of July, Rock The Schools is recording in New Orleans as part of a future series on the anniversary of post-Katrina school reform. Chris Stewart aka Citizen Stewart will speak with parents, educators, and community members about the challenges and successes that have come from rebirth of public education in a city that has a long history of racial caste and a three-tiered system of education.

School reform in New Orleans is a national story that is often called miraculous by education leaders, but local parents often tell a more mixed story. Our guest Ashana Bigard is one of those parents. She has helped parents navigate NOLA schools and has seen first hand, the struggles they have experienced to get the best education for their kids (even after reform). We talk to her as a critical friend, to hear what education reformers should know about the parent perspective. Ashana has been featured on the Edushyster blog and in The Atlantic.

Stewart’s mission with “Rock The Schools” is to create a greater educational opportunity for black communities by grounding the school reform debate in black history and transformative black thought. Stewart believes this is done by challenging the dominant trope of anti-school reform activism, and illustrating connections between the liberationist principles of yesterday’s black struggles, and today’s education proposals (e.g. “privatization,” school choice, and charter schools).” Stewart’s tag “Public education for an educated public” begs the question of accountability . . . does public education meet the standards of an educated public when students graduate well below standards required to getting a higher education?

Rock The Schools with Citizen Stewart is available on iHeartRadio’s Twin Cities News Talk podcast network, iTunes and under podcast at citizenstewart.org and brought to you by EducationPost.orgRock the Schools with Citizen Stewart is a co-production of CitizenStewart.org, OMG Media Solutions and iHeartMedia’s Twin Cities News Talk podcast network.

Stewart is a writer, speaker, essayist and education activist from Minnesota. Stewart began recording his podcast show in early March and releases a new episode weekly.
