Dr. Artika Tyner is a civil rights attorney, educator, highly sought-after speaker, advocate for justice and an award-winning author. She currently serves as the Associate Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of St. Thomas. Dr. Tyner was educated in Minnesota, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamline University and a Masters of Public Policy and Leadership and a Juris Doctorate from the University of St. Thomas School of Law.
Dr. Tyner is doing her social imact work through her foundation Planting People, Growing Justice. “Planting People” is about a lifetime commitment Dr. Tyner made to invest in people and is based on a Chinese proverb which reads, “If your vision is for a year, plant wheat. If your vision is for ten years, plant trees. If your vision is for a lifetime, plant people.”
Dr. Tyner recently released a children’s book, Justice Makes A Difference, the story of Miss Freedom Fighter, Esquire, inspired by Dr. Tyner’s childhood. What makes this book special is that Dr. Tyner co-authored the book with her mother, Jacklyn Milton, a K-12 educator, who understands the leadership and commitment that must be made to educate young people today. “The book itself has superpowers, in that it reflects the love and power my mother and grandmother instilled in me, that shaped who I am today,” comments Dr. Tyner.
Justice Makes A Difference is the first in a series of children’s books and related education tools and resources, which will be available to consumers soon. Justice will take you on a super hero’s adventure around the world – the world that Dr. Tyner figuratively traveled through via books read to her as a child by her mother and grandmother.
